Yeah, Germans really can't into English. Every time I read an English text with my students, I want to cry. They are only in their first semester, but still...
The English I can speak myself I learned from watching movies, reading books, internet and travel. The 5 years of English in school were just wasted time, I learned absolutely nothing.

He had probably no idea what an ATM is. You should have tried something like "money machine" :D

i easily could map a map like this, put some numbers in and *tada.

doesnt change the fact that dutch people indeed speaking a nice and clear english (heard it last week at their invasion of the alps). The bigger countries like france, italy, spain or germany aren´t in the need to speak foreign languages like in the smaller countries. for example here in germany you get every book, every US-movie in your own language. guess thats one of the mainreasons for the low % in the other bigger countries.

Thats only because the movies get translated into German.
I bet most Scandinavians + Dutch people learn it this way too :P
Well at least they are forced to kinda. I mean 86% and 90% is really high.

On the other hand the school system is also 100 times better probably. Dont know why its so hard to just copy them, not only in that regard.
But ofc its better to spend billions on fucking military projects or airports which never open.

56% is quite good for Germany.

Because between hold a conversation in english and speak just with "word to word", it's very different. ^^

In france, after my entrance in a university which is supposed to be "international", i understand why we have only 39%. And i'm with "young" ppl, who learned english from 6yo or so. I can't imagine for 30-40+ yo. Especially those who work in national entreprise or civil servant.

A funny map could be "how in the world, people are able to have a conversation in zerman without take "military" accent" :trollseal:

I'm afraid those numbers won't hold in real life and are exaggerated by a long shot, especially around CE.
But it is to be expected - people have this silly idea to try to look better then they really are.
