Last shooter I played multiplayer with for more than a few games was BF2

At least from my perspective the first 1-2 hours were the hardest ones. My buddy (Silver 2) wanted me to start outright with competitive, not bothering much about casual or anything else.
First Match was terrible, i got yelled at me for my stupidity and such (and i can perfectly understand that, who likes noobs/newbies in the first place if they suck as expected).

Until now i only played around 7-8 hours, almost competitive exclusively and my performance got better and better fairly quickly. Now i've come to the point where my buddy and i are in the end mostly only a few points away from eachother (not saying he's extremely good or something) and i am ok with my performance right now although there is still plenty of space to improve on (grenades that don't hurt mates but actually enemies and so on ).

And i'd say it is a hell of a lot of fun to play and communicate with eachother in skype/ts if it actually works out the way you wanted it to do.

Just 2cents from a Newbie's perspective.
